Medical Student Rotation

Class of 2010Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency, in conjunction with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, provides a four-week Family Medicine elective for fourth year medical students.

Students are selected for one of two unique experiences: Ambulatory Medicine and Community Care and Adult Medicine Services.  All experiences include participation in resident didactics, weekly medical student case conferences and behavioral medicine conferences.

Ambulatory and Community Care is an outpatient experience with opportunities to care for patients in a variety of community settings including individual continuity family medicine clinic, resident precepted clinics,  and one-on-one clinics with attending and community preceptors.  There are a variety of other experiences including but not limited to school based health care, and homeless clinics.

Adult Medicine Services is a sub-intern like experience working as a member of the inpatient team.  It includes daily didactics, hospital patient care and post hospital follow up clinic.

The clerkship is open to three students per block.  One slot is reserved for UCSF students; two slots are open to fourth-year students in good standing at accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. At this time, we are not set up to accommodate foreign/international medical students.

Students MUST have successfully completed clerkships in pediatrics and medicine, and are encouraged to have completed surgery and OB/GYN.

UCSF students may enroll through the Dept. of Community and Family Medicine. All other students need to provide us with a completed application, official transcripts, current CV, any USMLE/COMLEX scores available at the time of application, and a short personal statement.

The clerkship is not a prerequisite for acceptance into the residency program.  It is recommended for any student, no matter what his or her future interests, who would like to have more exposure to family medicine in a community setting. View sample student schedules here.
