The surgery experience provides the skills necessary for family physicians who do not plan to integrate inpatient surgical care into their practice. There is an emphasis on pre- and postoperative care and attention to outpatient surgical conditions that are most relevant to family physicians. Residents will work in the outpatient setting with our surgery colleagues to recognize and treat common outpatient surgical conditions. In the inpatient setting, residents will evaluate patients as they present to the emergency department, obtain surgical consultations and assist in the management of surgical inpatients. There is time devoted to assisting surgeons in the operating room as well as working with the anesthesiologists to learn intubation skills and learn the physiology of anesthetics and related agents. Residents also develop an extensive array of outpatient procedural skills in their longitudinal experiences at the Vista Family Health Center working with family medicine faculty as preceptors.
