Fostering Diversity

   The Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency has developed an innovative cross-cultural curriculum aimed at enhancing cultural awareness and emphasizing its value towards improving patient care.  The mission of our Culturally Responsive Medicine Curriculum is to promote and strengthen a relationship between the residency program and the diverse communities we serve, guided by a mindset of cultural mindfulness and compassion. Our specific goals are as follows: (1) Understand the impact of culture and identity on health. (2) Develop skills to provide culturally responsive care. (3) Appreciate the importance of self-reflection and identity development as physicians. (4) Contribute to the empowerment and wellness of the diverse communities we serve through the acts of education, service, mentoring, and relationship-building (5) Nurture an environment of cultural mindfulness in which diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences are honored and respected.

Our three-year longitudinal curriculum includes training in cultural mindfulness, health disparities, and linguistically appropriate care. Through formal didactics and experiential learning activities residents will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide culturally responsive health care.
 
Our residency offers opportunities for residents to partner with community organizations and members through direct involvement and shared learning, such as through our mobile clinic serving homeless youth and day laborers, participation in our pipeline mentoring programs, or Spanish radio and television health education shows.
 
The Community Engagement and Diversity Action Work Group (CEDAWG) offers residents and faculty an extracurricular forum for support, dialogue, and action geared toward promoting culturally responsive care. Together we create a safe and nurturing environment to explore and challenge one another in these efforts.
