Ananya Desai, DO

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Ananya was born in Sunnyvale, CA, and is excited to return to Northern California to join the Sutter Santa Rosa family! She completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas. During her time at UT Dallas, she learned the value of advocacy while on the executive team for an organization called Ekam that focused on supporting the health of women and children in rural India.

In medical school, Ananya fell in love with Family Medicine through rural medical trips to West Texas where she provided free medical care to patients of all ages and backgrounds. She also dedicated time to increasing awareness about reproductive justice and health disparities in pregnancy as an officer for both Medical Students for Choice and Black Graduate Student Association. She worked on research and a Quality Improvement project to increase prenatal care access to Guatemalan refugees in the Texas Panhandle.

Ananya’s passions in medicine expanded as her travels took her outside of Texas. She spent time with patients at the Hazelden Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, CA and gained an immense amount of gratitude for all of the people who trusted her with their struggles regarding addiction. From that experience, she carries forward a desire to always emphasize the humanity of the patients she serves. She also personally took care of over 180 people in inpatient and outpatient settings in the island of Bohol in the Philippines, treating acute concerns and endemic diseases, as well as conducting presurgical screenings for cataracts and other procedures. Along with addiction medicine and global health, Ananya has interests in HIV/AIDS medicine, preventive care, reproductive justice, and lifestyle medicine.

Outside of medicine, Ananya is passionate about the arts. She has learned, performed, and taught an Indian classical dance form called Bharatanatyam. She also loves singing in choirs and even helped start a choir at her medical school! She believes music is a universal language that can bring people of all backgrounds together to find joy and meaning in life. She also enjoys reading nonfiction, going to farmers markets, and hiking. Ananya is grateful to her family, friends, and partner for supporting her in pursuing her goals and becoming the best version of herself.
