Elective Rotation: Adolescent Medicine
Location: Elsie Allen High School
Elsie Allen houses a Santa Rosa Community Health Center within their school but serves adolescents in all of Santa Rosa (and maybe outside as well). Many students from other schools get their primary care there.
You’ll work with their Nurse Practitioner who runs the clinic. You see patients on your own and then precept with plenty of autonomy. On average, you’ll see 5 students per half day. The most common chief complaints are contraception counseling/maintenance, URIs and MSK. There is a counselor available to see patients same day. You gets lots of hands on with IUDs, nexplanons and if you want, immunizations.

Elective Selective: Adolescent Medicine
From: Brandon Cortez
I spent several half days working with the Nurse Practitioners at the Elsie Allen Clinic, which is part of the Santa Rosa Community Health System and on campus at Elsie Allen High School. Students from this high school as well as others from the area are able to obtain confidential teen health services. I saw about 5-6 patients for mostly contraception, STI checks/treatment, and mental health support. There are opportunities to place Nexplanons, IUDs, complete blood draws, and providing mentoring. This is a great use of elective time in my opinion!
