Elective Rotation: Cancer and Primary Care

My 36-year-old sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma during February of my intern year, so I used my elective time to help take care of her while she underwent chemotherapy. We went to restorative yoga and worked on her nutrition using “The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen” cookbook by Rebecca Katz. We also interviewed a neuro-oncologist at the University of Cincinnati on the cognitive effects of chemotherapy and other neurologic side effects of which primary care doctors should be aware. Most importantly, I took her to a baseball game and supported her as her beloved Cubs lost yet again!
