Elective Rotation: Celas Maya Language School & Centro de Salud
Contact: Anna L. Chollet
Location: Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala
Celas Maya is a Spanish language school in Guatemala’s second largest city, Quetzaltenango (aka Xela). Celas Maya provides one-on-one language classes with a Spanish teacher, up to 5 hours per day. They will additionally arrange for a home-stay with a local family and clinical experience based on the student’s interest.
During my two weeks in Xela, I worked alongside a Guatemalan “general medicine” doctora in the local “Centro de Salud”, which is a clinic funded by the ministry of health, seeing pregnant and non-pregnant women, children, and some men. The population is a mix of Latina and Maya, and rarely a traveler. I saw a range of patients with everything; tuberculosis, pregnancy, malnutrition, herpes, URI.
I spent my afternoons in the language school receiving one-on-one tutoring. The sessions are a mix of conversation, grammar, and medical vocabulary with nightly home work assignments.
Overall it was a great experience!
