Elective Rotation: Correctional Medicine
Contact: Rhianon Liu, Allison Bacon
Location: Correctional Medical Facility Vacaville
I spent a week working at the Correctional Medical Facility in Vacaville, CA. This is the “medical prison;” ie where all prisoners with chronic medical conditions are transferred. There are primary care doctors as well as areas that function more like inpatient, SNF, and ED settings. They also have the only CA certified hospice of any prison in the state. Overall this was an eye-opening experience and one I would highly recommend. The doctor in charge of the rotation, Michele DiTomas, is a UCSF family med grad and passionate about social justice. Ethical quandaries are a daily phenomenon!
