Elective Rotation: Healthcare for the unhoused
Contact: Tahereh K. Naderi
I spent my elective time learning home about healthcare for the unhoused. I spent most of my time in Guerneville working with Russian River health center and the Third Street Clinic (a clinic specifically created to meet the needs of those with unstable housing). I spent some time with Dr Kozart, a psychiatrist that used due to work for the county but is currently at RRHC. I did some outreach with a team, where time was spent going to different encampments and reaching to patients there, ensuring they have appropriate follow up for their medical conditions, and giving out supplies. I also shadowed Dr Garrison-Jakel at third street clinic. I also spend 2 afternoons at the Forestville teen clinic, that serves young people on the area and does free STI screening and treat, met and birth control management. It was a wonderful experience learning more about specific needs for those with unstable housing, including screening for various conditions, observing an integrated team based approach to patient care including MAs, RNs, social workers, mental health providers and MDs. I only wish I had more time to spend at RRHC and learn from all the talented and passionate people that live there.
