Elective Rotation: Herbal Medicine

I sought out a few ways to expose myself to herbal medicine training. I took the Intro to Herbal medicine course at the Ohlone Center for Herbal Studies (http://www.ohlonecenter.org/) in Berkeley and a course on Herbs for the CNS at the California School of Herbal Studies (http://www.cshs.com/index.html) in Forrestville. The courses included a review of different herbs for various organ systems, properties of herbs used to treat ailments for each system, and in the Intro course we took an herb walk to learn to identify some local plants and their medicinal uses. I then shadowed Dr. Camarata who practices herbal medicine at the Integrative Medicine Clinic at Sonoma County Indian Health Project, which was an opportunity to put into practice some of the knowledge I had learned in the classes. I was excited about learning to use the medicine of the earth, so I then harvest herbs out of the Vista Clinic garden as well as my own garden and others in the area to make medicine at home.
