The first step in becoming an Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant for physicians is to take a 90-hour course on breastfeeding. This course is administered online through a few websites, and there are also intensive in-person courses (though not locally, from what I could find). I chose the program available through https://www.lactationtraining.com/ which cost $975. The material includes things like early initiation, positioning, lip/tongue/buccal ties, nursing multiples, anatomy/physiology of the breast, composition of human breast milk, hyperbilirubinemia, etc. About 80-90% of the material was brand new to me, and the remainder was a review of familiar material (ie, hyperbilirubinemia). The course was well-referenced, and also came with recommended textbook chapters. After completion of the course, you have a breastfeeding consultation “certification,” which does not mean much, but could help to get the clinical hours you need to become an IBCLC. I found the course highly useful, and it has altered my practice in several ways. Make sure to include some time shadowing some of our awesome inpatient or outpatient lactation consultants in addition. Strong recommendation for anyone interested in OB/women’s care!
