Elective Rotation: Medical Mission Trip (Mexico)
Location: Valladolid, Mexico
I did a two-week medical mission trip based in the city of Valladolid, Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula. The mission of International Medical Assistance (IMA), the sponsoring organization, is to share the love of God through serving the poor in medical, surgical, and dental projects. I was part of a team of about 20 volunteers including three physicians and two dentists. Each day we went to a different neighboring community of primarily Mayan people who had limited access to medical care; we would set up small stations and see patients for their acute and chronic medical conditions. We had a limited pharmacy contained in five large ice chests with which to dispense basic medications. I appreciated the challenge of providing medical care in the absence of being able to order labs or imaging, and having to rely primarily on history-taking and physical exam skills. It was my first time doing a medical mission trip, and hopefully the first of many more to come in the future!
