Contact: Tania Rezai

Location: Oahu, Hawaii

Spend 2.5 weeks on Oahu learning more about the structural violence faced by COFA populations as well as Native Hawaiians and the ways in which the political and health systems have failed these populations. Explored different community health centers and identified areas of need on the island including exposure to ACEs interventions and Adolescent Health. Met with the family medicine residency department to identify ways in which they are training residents to address these matters.

I spent time rotating at Waikiki Health Center and learned about the challenges faced by the patient population there- lots of substance abuse, homelessness, Hepatitis C, HIV. I also spent time at KKV community health center and learned about the community development projects and public health work that is ongoing there- including a free dental clinic run by dental residents, hula for health, artisan skill building for micronesian women and the development of a community garden and restoring native plants while engaging the community in service.
