Elective Rotation: Safe Motherhood/URICT-Uganda
Location: Kamuli, Uganda: URICT-Uganda NGO and Kamuli General Hospital
URICT-Uganda is a small NGO in Kamuli, Uganda with multiple ambitious community projects. I worked with URICT and the local hospital, Kamuli General, perform a program evaluation and needs assessment for URICT’s Safe Motherhood Initiative started in 2014. The goal of the project is to reduce maternal morbidity/mortality and perinatal death by training rural birth attendants to do health education and attend deliveries in the local villages. During the assessment, I spent time in the hospital and some in the local villages to discuss the project with doctors, midwives, birth attendants, and villagers to identify areas that need to be strengthened, such as communication and transportation when referral to a clinic or hospital is needed.
