Elective Rotation: Spanish Immersion in Guatemala
Contact: Brandon Cortez
Location: Xela, Gutemala
I spent two weeks at Pop Wuj, a Spanish language immersion program that provides one-on-one lessons in conversational Spanish and maintains several outreach projects in the community. I enrolled in the Medical Spanish Program and as a part of this cohort I completed cultural competency courses, volunteered at the “Safe Stoves” project in the outskirts of Xela, and worked at the Pop Wuj Free Clinic, located below the language school. I really enjoyed the clinical experiences and was able to improve my confidence in conversational Spanish as well. After returning to Santa Rosa, I completed a two-week selective that included several afternoons of online independent Spanish study, several half-day clinics at Roseland Pediatrics, and worked on developing curriculum for the Bayer Farm Summer Lunch Program.
