Allison M. Slater, M.D., M.B.E.

University of California, Irvine; Allison grew up in San Diego, CA as the youngest daughter of a family physician and ESL teacher. Her upbringing inspired her commitment to language access, patient-centered primary care, and serving marginalized communities. In pursuit of Spanish fluency, she majored in Hispanic Studies at Scripps College, where she had the opportunity to study public health systems in Argentina, literature in Spain, and learned all about intersectional feminism. After college, she spent a year in Mexico City as a Fulbright scholar researching patient satisfaction in safety net family planning clinics. She loved her medical school experience in UC Irvine’s PRIME-LC program, which trains bilingual physician-advocates for the Latinx community. In medical school, Allison pursued her passion for family planning through rotations in CA and Mexico. She and a classmate became passionate about trauma-informed care, creating a workshop which has become part of her medical school’s doctoring curriculum. Allison also completed a Master of Bioethics at Harvard where she focused on moral obligations to prioritize professional medical interpretation with patients who have limited English proficiency. Her passions include trauma-informed care, family planning, clinical ethics and whole-person care. Outside of work, Allison loves cooking Mexican food, staying active through all kinds of fitness classes, reading (or listening to) novels, traveling internationally, and most importantly, spending time with her partner and sweet rescue pup, Cielo!
