Anna Craigen Bowen, M.D.

University of Rochester School of Medicine; Anna grew up in and around Boston. She studied anthropology at University of California San Diego and the Universidad de Granada in Spain. After college, she became a certified Hatha yoga instructor in India, worked on organic farms in southern India and Tanzania, and learned more about ethical and sustainable community engagement while volunteering at a non-profit in Malawi. She then returned to the U.S. where she worked at an oncology clinic in San Francisco for two years. Anna attended medical school in upstate New York, where she focused on anti-human trafficking and reproductive justice. Interested in learning more about addressing racial and ethnic inequities, she participated in the Global and Latinx Health Pathways. She conducted qualitative research to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, investigating the social determinants of infant survival in the Indian Himalayas of Ladakh and taking a year-out to study stress-levels and parenting experiences of fathers in Ghana. Anna is drawn to Family Medicine as a field that provides care for people as integral parts of larger communities in a way that celebrates their full humanity and prioritizes equity and justice. She is excited to return to California, reconnect with her loved ones there, and join new communities amongst the redwoods in Santa Rosa. Her interests within medicine include reproductive planning, addiction medicine, LGBTQ health, integrative medicine, and im(migrant) health. She also enjoys gardening, practicing her newfound love of ceramics, walking in the woods, or just about anything related to connecting with the Earth and its remarkable inhabitants.
