Chih Yun Angelica Teng, M.D., M.P.H.

Virginia Commonwealth University; Angelica was born in Taiwan but immigrated to San Jose, CA where she grew up surrounded by the diverse blend of languages, food, and cultures in the Bay Area. She attended UC Berkeley where a major in Molecular Cell Biology allowed her to study the pathophysiology of disease under the microscope, while a minor in Global Poverty and Practice through the Blum Center for Developing Economies challenged her to connect how socioeconomic factors could predispose certain populations to worse health outcomes. When pursuing a master’s in public health at Brown University, her thesis projects reflected a growing interest in the macro vs micro influence of nutrition on cardio metabolic disease; encompassing the influence of food deserts on health outcomes of the underserved to how high fat or high carb diets upregulated inflammatory markers in mice. As she continued to volunteer alongside family physicians at Rotacare Free Clinic and Rhode Island Free Clinic, she was inspired by the intersection of patient education, preventative medicine, and social justice in primary care. She was honored to be accepted to VCU School of Medicine as one of the family medicine scholar tracts (fmSTAT) where she continued to coordinate mobile student clinics as the Community Service Chair for the Students for Family Medicine Association. Angelica is excited to return to CA to join the Sutter Santa Rosa family to further explore nutrition, women and children’s health, and public health advocacy. In her free time, Angelica can be found bookmarking and trying new recipes, gardening, practicing yoga, and coffee/bakery shop hopping.
