Matthew Mayeda, D.O., M.P.H.

Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine; Matthew (he/him/él) was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As the grandson of interned Japanese-American farm workers and Filipino immigrants, he is passionate about empowering underserved communities. Realizing the importance of health systems in perpetuating inequities, Matthew developed a major in Health Care- Social Issues at UC San Diego, studied chronic diseases in Jordan, worked as the financial analyst for the University of California’s Student Health Insurance Program (UC SHIP), and obtained his Master of Public Health from UC Davis. His practicum on childhood obesity and food insecurity at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed his calling to medical school as it further exposed the underutilization of clinical medicine in preventing disease. Matthew’s personal experience with the benefits of osteopathic medicine inspired him to attend Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he had unique opportunities for advocacy at the state capital, rural medicine research, sustainable global medicine in Peru, and providing osteopathic manual treatments to NCAA Division I Athletes. His primary leadership involvement in medical school was through the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), as the National Vice President and Speaker of the House. Through SOMA, Matthew passed policy on food insecurity, developed collaborations with underrepresented medical student groups, and led the creation of a Virtual Advocacy Day to address COVID-19 issues. As a current resident at Sutter Santa Rosa, Matthew is overjoyed to continue pursuing social justice and humanism through family medicine. Beyond the healthcare walls, Matthew can be found dancing, practicing martial arts, playing his ukulele, drinking coffee, trying new recipes, or going on ice cream dates with his life partner.
