Maya Zwerdling, M.D.
University of California, San Francisco; Maya grew up in the redwoods of rural Humboldt County, CA where she hopes to eventually return. She left California to attend the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University where she studied international development and spent a semester in Nicaragua. Wanting to address social and economic disparities in the US and work in small town led her to a mobile clinic in Humboldt County where she discovered healthcare as a powerful tool in community empowerment. Prior to medical school she was a medical assistant at a community clinic and an emergency room technician. She has also worked in the labor movement and for organic farms, as well as for a non-profit she helped found which assisted student groups organizing around improving labor policies at colleges and universities. At UCSF she pursued her interests in rural healthcare delivery, integrative medicine, and women’s health. Maya loves gardening, dancing, reading, yoga, riding her bike, and backpacking. She is excited to spend as much of her free time as possible at the river and escaping to her favorite mountains, the Trinity Alps.
