Safi Ahmed, M.D., M.P.H., Junior Faculty; Integrative Medicine Fellow

UMass Medical School – Safi grew up in a Boston suburb as the youngest of 3 children of Indian immigrants. He completed a BA/MPH at Tufts University and Tufts School of Medicine with majors in Child Development and Community Health and a graduate concentration in Health Communications. Before medical school, he took 3 years to volunteer and travel abroad, 2 years of which were as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural South Africa working in family literacy and health education. He extended his medical school to 5 years at UMass Medical School and spent the fifth year doing extra rotations in integrative medicine, quality improvement, Native American health, as well as social medicine and community health in Uganda.
Safi chose Family Medicine as a bridge between clinical medicine and community health. He stumbled upon psychiatry after realizing physical health and mental health cannot be separated, that we are mind, body and spirit. He completed a 5 year combined residency in Family Medicine and Psychiatry at UC San Diego. His continuity clinic was based at a homeless shelter were he fell in love with providing both medical care and psychiatric care to homeless, uninsured and undocumented patients. He is excited to be moving north to Santa Rosa to combine his passions in underserved care and integrative medicine. Outside of work, he enjoys learning how to cook, photography, traveling, hiking, personal growth/spiritual development and spending quality time with friends and family. He looks forward to joining the Santa Rosa family!
