Medical Student Clerkships

The SRFM Residency, in conjunction with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, provides a four-week Family Medicine elective for 4th year medical students.

The clerkship is open to three students per block. One slot is reserved for UCSF students; two slots are open to 4th-year medical students in good standing at accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. At this time, we are not set up to accommodate foreign/international medical students.
"this is a truly wonderful community of people who welcomed me, incorporated me, shared with me, and pushed me to improve each day. couldn't have asked for a more positive experience."

The Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency in Santa Rosa, CA provides a unique and outstanding opportunity for fourth year medical students to provide health care for people who cannot access care elsewhere, including many who have Medicaid or insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and those who are uninsured. Visiting students will see a variety of patients from different backgrounds, including monolingual speakers of Spanish, Khmer, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, Farsi, and Lao, with video or telephone translation when needed. We provide medication-assisted treatment to pregnant and non-pregnant people suffering from substance use disorders, and we advocate for social justice on both the individual and community levels. Visiting students will also have the opportunity to provide prenatal care, see patients in our specialty clinics (including dermatology, rheumatology, neurology, gender-affirming care, and others), care for patients in both inpatient and ambulatory settings, practice intraarticular and periarticular injections on training models and patients, take Evidence-Based Medicine to the next level, and perform point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). We have consistently been ranked among the top Family Medicine residencies in the US, and we invite you to join us here in beautiful Santa Rosa for a top-notch educational experience, with weekends biking in wine country or tasting award-winning, internationally recognized wines (but please don’t drink and bike!). We hope to see you here.

At present, we are able to offer the following clerkship plans:
  • 2 weeks in ambulatory setting (Vista Family Health Center and other associated outpatient experiences) + 2 weeks on inpatient medicine service at the hospital.
  • 2 weeks in ambulatory setting (Vista Family Health Center and other associated outpatient experiences) + 2 weeks on inpatient OB service at the hospital.
  • 2 weeks on inpatient medicine service + 2 weeks on inpatient obstetrics service
All experiences include participation in resident didactics, weekly medical student case conferences and behavioral medicine conferences. Our primary goal is to provide students with an outstanding clerkship experience, highlighting the breadth and depth of Family Medicine.
Specific objectives include:
In the ambulatory/outpatient settings, students will:
  • Diagnose and manage at least 4 commonly encountered acute conditions in outpatient Family Medicine.
  • Include a broad and appropriate differential diagnosis relevant to at least ¾ of the patients seen during the rotation, and propose diagnostic &/or management plans for these patients.
  • Accurately and concisely present a variety of ambulatory patients to the supervising resident &/or attending physician.
On inpatient medicine, students will:
  • Diagnose and manage hospital inpatients with at least 3 different conditions.
  • Admit patients and suggest diagnostic evaluation and care plans daily on their patients.
  • Demonstrate competency in history-taking, physical examination, and differential diagnosis on hospital inpatients.
On inpatient obstetrics service, students will:
  • Care for pregnant patients during labor and delivery.
  • Care for at least one patient with complicated pregnancy and/or labor.
  • Round on postpartum patients and baby “couplets” after delivery.
Students MUST have successfully completed clerkships in pediatrics and medicine, and are encouraged to have completed surgery and OB/GYN.
How to apply:
UCSF students may enroll through the Dept. of Community and Family Medicine. All other students need to provide us with a completed application, official transcripts, current CV, immunization record, any USMLE/COMLEX scores, and a short personal statement through the VSLO
® Application System.

"IT WAS A JOY TO LIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AND WORK ALONGSIDE AND LEARN FROM SUCH EXCELLENT HEALERS AND EXPERIENCED PHYSICIANS FOR A MONTH."
The Residency receives a large number of applications from students hoping to attend our program for residency. Although we are unable to guarantee an interview for all students who complete a 4th-year elective (sub-internship) here, we are excited to have you rotate with us! We endeavor to provide you with an outstanding educational experience regardless of what specialty you choose or where you match.
