Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism

Aligning with the social justice values of the program, and responding to concerns of residents, the leadership of the Residency brought on diversity, equity and inclusion consultant, Sharon G.E. Washington, Ed.D., MPH to guide the program through a comprehensive assessment and program revitalization.
Picture
Multiple opportunities were presented for residents, faculty and staff to provide their experiences and recommendations for making the program a more inclusive, safe, and welcoming atmosphere to learn and grow. These included a climate survey, listening sessions, one-on-one sessions, and interactive program meetings.
Based upon feedback from the residency community, the Process for Engaging in Action to Create Equity (PEACE) effort was developed.
Picture
This process frames the span of the program in five stages: entering, experiencing, education, enrichment, and exiting; with objectives and opportunities for anti-bias efforts integrated into each of the stages. PEACE efforts will be implemented and evaluated, with the intention of cultivating sustainable change that will be maintained beyond the scope of the consultancy.

Ways we are working to continue to our efforts:
  • Increasing faculty racial literacy.
  • Creating community-generated safe and brave space agreements.
  • Revising evaluations to center objective, observable behaviors to mitigate bias.
  • Integrating longitudinal racial caucusing.
  • Maintaining an anonymous bias reporting tool.
  • Collaborating with community partners to center the needs of our patient populations.
